How do the image in the mirror in Chapter 1 relate to the physician in Chapter IV, "The Interview"?

  1. In Chapter 2, there is an image of Roger Chillingworth. In the mirror, he is portrayed as intelligent and highly intuitive. In Chapter 4, Chillingworth tells Hester that, despite her silence on the subject, he will merely look at her suitor and know her partner in betrayal. Each instance is related because they both show Chillingworth's intuitive nature.

  3. In THE SCARLET LETTER, Hawthorne describes to the reader an image that is reflected on a mirror of a man. This image relates to the physician in chapter IV because they are the same person. The man in the mirror in chapter 2 is Roger Chillingworth, Hester Prynne's husband. The reader can infer this because in the description of the image it said that his "left shoulder a triffle higher than the right"(Hawthorne 41). The same description is given of the man in the crowd who turned out to be Roger Chillingworth.

  4. In Chapter I, the image of Roger Chillingworth in the mirror relates to the physician in chapter IV because they are both the same person. Also even though Hester Prynn refuse to reveal her secrets to Chillingworth, he and the physician can see right through her.

  5. The image in the mirror in Chapter 1 relates to the physician in Chapter 4. The image in the mirror in chapter 1 is Roger Chillingworth and it shows the characteristics of him as a human being, very smart and educated. In Chapter 4, Roger Chillingworth adds that he observes things very well and he could see right through Hester Prynne. The way in which they relate is how they both show Roger Chillingworth's nature.

  6. In the mirror Hester Prynne sees a man with "scholar-like visage"(41) who was "slightly deformed" for one shoulder was higher than the other. In chapter 4, the man who Hester Prynne recognized in the crowd had the same deformity(42). The man is revealed to be the physician- Roger Chillingworth.

  8. The image described in the mirror and the physian are in relation because both are the same person. The person in the mirror was described as deformed because one shoulder was higher than the other. This is in comparison with the man seen in the crowd in chapter 4. Both people turned out to be Roger Chillingworth, who's deformity was a shadow of his true personality.

  9. The image in the mirror of Roger Chillingworth in Chapter I, describes him as a very educated and talented individual. This reflection is ironic because it displays that Roger Chillingworth is actually the physician and both possess some form of deformity as shown in the mirror in both Chapter I and Chapter IV. One can conclude to this statement because both figures in the mirror had a left shoulder that was a bit higher than the right.

  10. In Aminah’s blog addressing the image in the mirror in Chapter and how it relates to the physician, she states that, “The image in the mirror in Chapter 1 relates to the physician in Chapter 4.” This proves true when one considers what the actual image represented. The image in the mirror in Chapter 1 correlates to the physician in Chapter 4, because they are in fact the same person. In Chapter 4, the image in the mirror symbolizes that the physician was a very wise gentlemen and that Hester Prynne's character was clearly visible to him.

  12. In Courtney Howe's blog addressing the image in the mirror in Chapter 1 and how it relates to the physician in Chapter IV, "The Interview", she states, “In Chapter I, the image of Roger Chillingworth in the mirror relates to the physician in chapter IV because they are both the same person". This proves true since the image being depicted in the mirror has one shoulder slightly higher than the other, as for in chapter 4 the same description is told.

  13. In Esther Telusma's blog addressing the mirror, she states, "The image in the mirror of Roger Chillingworth in Chapter I, describes him as a very educated and talented individual." This proves true when one considers the reflection to actually be the physician. Also both reflections show that the left shoulder is higher than the right.

  14. In Aminah Richards’s blog addressing the image in the mirror and how it relates to the physician in chapter IV she states, “The way in which they relate is how they both show Roger Chillingworth's nature". This proves true when one considers the way he was depicted in the mirror. He was shown to be highly perceptive and understanding in the mirror and the physician in chapter IV proves this by revealing that even though she did not speak on the subject he still know what was going on.

  15. In Faracesca Saint-Pierre blog, regarding the image in the mirror in Chapter 1 and how it relates to the physician in Chapter IV, she states, "In the mirror Hester Prynne sees a man with “scholar-like visage” who was “slightly deformed” for one shoulder was higher than the other. In chapter 4, the man who Hester Prynne recognized in the crowd had the same deformity." This proves true because Hester sees the same image twice. Both figures shared distinct similarities and this is how the two relate. The irony is both were figures of Roger Chillingworth.
