Who are "Lethe" and "Nepenthe" in Chapter IV, p 50, and how do they compare and contrast to the characters or the situation in the novel so far?

  1. In Greek mythology, Lethe is known as the river of Hades that helps one forget their past lives. Nepenthe is known as a Greek antidepressant. Both substances compare to the situation because their qualities can supposedly provide the antedote to Hester's hurt and shame. Furthermore, Lethe is a river of evil and is known for being associated with sin just as Hester's adultery. However, they are a contrast to the situation because the suffering is her inescapable destiny. Magic substances or medicines cannot cure that.

  2. In Greek Mythology, Lethe is a river in Hades. Drinking its water caused loss of memory. Lethe is used in this passage as a synonym for a tonic that causes forgetfulness. Nepenthe is known as a Greek drug that caused forgetfulness. Both of these substances are similar to the situation because they can heal Hester's shame. The Lethe river compares to Hester's sin. They both contrast to the situation because these substances cannot change her past and cure her future.

  3. In classical Greek, lethe means forgetfulness or concealment.Lethe is one of the several rivers of Hades, and those who drank from it experienced complete forgetfulness. Nepenthe is a medicine for sorrow, literally, an anti-depressant - a "drug of forgetfulness". They compare to the situation because what Hester did was shameful, and Nepenthe or lethe could somehow relieve her of these type of feelings, and in contrast these magical viles or medicines cannot cure this manifest destiny of her suffering.

  5. Lethe and Nepenthe are prominent in Greek mythology. Nepenthe is a sort of Greek antidepressant and Lethe is the river of Hades that aids in the forgetfulness of people's past lives. Both of these mythological ideas serve as the resolution to Hester Prynne's predicaments. Lethe is mainly associated with the concept of sin which completely corresponds to Hester's adultery. In contrast, Hester Prynne's adversity will forever be her fate, which medicine will not aid.

  7. In chapter IV Lethe and Nepenthe are both mentioned. In greek mythology, Lethe is a river of Hades and Nepenthe is a Greek antidepressant. Lethe aids in the forgetfulness of peoples past lives. Both of these ideas act as a resolution to Hester Prynne's conflicts. All together, they both contrast with her fate because niether one of them can act as a cure to her destiny. Hester's future is what it already is and unfortunately nothing can change it.

  9. Lethe and Nepenthe are well known in Greek mythology . Lethe is a river of Hades while on the other hand Nepenthe is a anti-depressant. In Chapter IV, p 50 they compare to the charcters like Hester Prynne since tehy seem to help cure Prynnes embarrasement but it conflicts with the idea since Lethe and Nepenthe cannot change her past and cure her future .Prynne is stuck with her disgrace and teh consequences of her decisions.

  10. In ancient Greek mythology, Nepenthe is basically an anti-depressant. Lethe is the river of Hades and if one were to drink from the river it would cause them to become forgetful. These can both compare to Hester and her situation in the way that she is yearning to ease the pain of her sin or even to forget. The way it unfortunately contrasts with her situation is that any magic or substance cannot wipe away the sin she has committed or the pain it brings her.

  11. Lethe and Nepenthe are objects from Greek mythology. Lethe is a river in Hades that causes compete forgetfulness to those that drink from it. Nepenthe is a Greek antidepressant. These are medicines that can aid Hester in a time where forgetfulness and antidepressant are much needed. Lethe is also a river that is associated with sin. These two objects contrast Hester's situation because she cannot forget her shame and because the red letter that she wears keeps depression close to her heart.

  12. In Shantae’s blog addressing who "Lethe" and "Nepenthe" were, she states, “Both substances compare to the situation because they are supposedly the solution and cure to the way Hester is feeling;full of pain and embarrassment.” This proves true when one considers how these two characters compare and contrast to the situations in the novel. Nepenthe is known as a Greek antidepressant and Lethe is known as the river of Hades that helps one forget their past lives. Both compare to Hester Prynne's constant struggles and pains. "Lethe" refers to the adulterous acts committed by Hester Prynne. However, the path that Hester Prynne has taken can only lead to more destruction and confusion.
